We live in a time where each of us has a photo and video camera in our pocket. Smartphones are becoming more and more advanced not only in their appearance, but also in the cameras that are installed in them. Consequently, each of us has a powerful tool in our pocket that is used every day, both for taking pictures/recording loved ones and for making semi-professional pictures and videos.

If you're one of those smartphone users who like to experiment with video recording and editing, this blog is definitely for you. Of course, this blog is not only about those who like to shoot with their phones, but also those who do so with separate semi-professional and professional digital cameras.

As in the previous one, in this blog we will write about two well-known software (programs) that you can use to process your videos. This time, we will write about free software.

iMOVIE

As we mentioned in the last blog (when we wrote about the reasons why you may not want to use/buy Final Cut Pro), macOS users get a basic video editing software in iMovie; it is a free program, and if you have the opportunity, you should definitely try it.

Most professionals rightly view iMovie as video software for beginners. Compared to Final Cut and Premiere Pro, this software does not offer enough options and that is why it is almost never used for highly professional video processing.

But that doesn't mean you shouldn't use it. Of course, as with using Final Cut, this software is restricted exclusively to users of Apple products. Which means if you don't have an Apple device - you can't use iMovie.

But everyone else who has Apple devices and wants to learn video editing should give iMovie a chance, because the simplicity of this software and its basic video editing options can be a good starting point and gateway to the world of video production.

The fact that this is software that is not used by most professionals should not discourage you. It doesn't matter what the pros use, but what really matters is what works for you. If iMovie does it, why spend money on video editing software when you can use that same money to upgrade your video recording equipment?

Pros of iMovie:

+ Good for beginners who want to learn video editing

+ It's free

+ It has enough functionalities to get the job done in most cases

+ Like other Apple software it has a minimalist look and is relatively easy to understand

Cons of iMovie:

- Only those who have macOS devices can use it

- Fewer functionalities compared to other software

- If you plan to do professional video editing, you should keep in mind that one day you will have to change the software and use a more advanced one

DAVINCI RESOLVE

The second video editing software we are going to write about in this blog is DaVinci Resolve, which is kind of a mix of free and paid software. Unlike with Premiere Pro and Final Cut Pro which you have to pay to use, with DaVinci Resolve you have the option to use a free version. But if you want more features, you will have to buy a more advanced version of it.

What are the reasons you may want to choose DaVinci Resolve as the software for processing your video projects? This software has a very simple interface that is easy to use. Not only that, but it also has a large number of functionalities and tools with which you will be able to process your video projects.

In addition to offering you basic video processing (cutting and merging a large number of videos into one, cropping videos), with this software you also get many other functionalities (the ability to edit colors, add transitions, subtitles, graphics, edit audio, etc.) which makes it really hard to find better freeware in the market.

As we mentioned earlier, with DaVinci Resolve you have two versions: paid and free. The free version is perhaps the best free video editing software on the market. But if you need more functionality (processing footage with a higher resolution than 4K, more professional possibilities for "playing" with colors, sharing the working version of video projects online, etc.), then DaVinci Studio is the software you need . Its price is almost the same as that of Final Cut Pro = $295.

DaVinci Resolve Pros:

+ The basic version of the software is free

+ Offers professional functionalities

+ It is relatively simple to operate

+ Offers many of the functionalities of paid software

+ There are more and more users of this software on the Internet, which means that the online platform for support and help is increasing more and more

Cons of DaVinci Resolve:

- To use the software without problems, you need to have a minimum of 16GB of RAM in your computer

- If you want access to all the functionalities that the software offers, you need to buy the DaVinci Studio version
